In the past, we have discussed additional training on building the GIC System Model and performing the Vulnerability Assessment. Following is a description on the second session of the course offered by Siemens PTI. ERCOT hosted the first session of this course last year. We will discuss this course and any other suggestions for training at our meeting tomorrow.

PSSC 810 - PSSE GIC Workshop (1 day)
PSSC 810 is hands-on-workshop to run GIC analysis on User's actual large-scale power flow network using PSSE GIC module to meet requirements of NERC Standard TPL‑007‑1. The workshop will review the User’s current GIC model including any assumptions made in data input and will provide guidance on how to improve the model. By the end of the workshop the participants will be able to validate any assumptions made, improve their GIC model and better understand how to interpret the results in order to meet the NERC Standard TPL-007-1. Following topics will be covered:
a) Analyze GIC data file created for User's power flow network to meet TPL-007-1 R2 (Maintain System models and GIC System (DC) models).
I. Discuss the assumptions made when creating this file, reviewing whether these assumptions are valid.
II. Discuss which documents or results from PSSE can be used to support these assumptions.
III. How to read transformer test reports and translate into the GIC data to increase model accuracy.
b) Using PSSE and PSSE GIC module perform GMD Vulnerability assessment studies (TPL-007-1 R4). The impact on the neighbor‘s network shall be studied.
c) Using PSSE GIC module, assemble GIC flow information report for the worst case geoelectric field orientation (TPL-007-1 R5(1)).
d) Using PSSE GIC module, assemble GIC flow information for transformers that need to studied for thermal impact assessment (TPL-007-1 R6).
e) Discuss possible corrective actions that can be done to the system and how to implement any corrective action measures (TPL-007-1 R7).
f) Developing Python scripts to run above studies as well as plotting GIC results on maps and slider diagrams.
