NOTICE DATE:  September 30, 2009

NOTICE TYPE:  M-A082709-02 Operations

SHORT DESCRIPTION:  Proposal to disable the Macedonia SPS

INTENDED AUDIENCE:  ERCOT Market Participants

DAY AFFECTED:  August 20, 2009

LONG DESCRIPTION:  ERCOT has received a request to permanently disable the Special Protection System (SPS) at Macedonia. This SPS is intended to open the 138 kV transmission tie line between the Lower Colorado River Authority (LCRA) Transmission Services Corporation (TSC) and CenterPoint Energy at the Macedonia substation when specific contingencies cause overloads on the Waller-Macedonia line due to large North to Houston power transfers. This SPS would be disabled due to a recent upgrade to the line.

The ERCOT ISO has completed its review and has approved the proposal to permanently disable this SPS.  This SPS was originally disabled on May 4, 2009, to facilitate area outages as part of the line upgrades, and has remained disabled since.  The SPS will remain disabled.  Information regarding SPSs can be found in the “Special Protection Systems Information” section of the ERCOT Planning and Operations Information secure website:  http://planning.ercot.com/login/login.
