SHORT DESCRIPTION: ERCOT will be issuing new VeriSign public root certific=

LONG DESCRIPTION: As of October 2010, VeriSign began migration of its publ=
ic root certification authorities from 1024-bit RSA keys to 2048-bit RSA ke=
ys. This change is an industry-wide initiative. The US National Institute o=
f Standards and Technology (NIST) recommended transitioning over to the 204=
8-bit keys by the end of 2010. Going forward, all Secured Socket Layer (SSL=
) certificates issued to ERCOT by VeriSign will have this requirement.
It is important to begin implementing these new VeriSign public root certif=
icates to avoid any future issues as a result of ERCOT updating existing ce=
rtificates. All users, via browser or API, that communicate with ERCOT will=
need to have the updated root certificate installed for validated SSL comm=
unication. The root certificate is how a client certificate validates that =
the communication is secure.
Browser vendors are also beginning to require the use of 2048-bit keys. For=
example, Microsoft has determined requirements for all certificates which =
mandate all new root certificates must have a minimum of 2048-bit RSA keys.
ACTION REQUIRED: All Market Participants need to install the new root cert=
ificate before the current certificate expires on November 13, 2010.
For Windows based API applications, the root certificate attached to this n=
otice will need to be installed into the trusted root certificate store at =
the server level. This can be done through the Microsoft Management Console=
. An application restart is suggested to recognize the new certificate.
For UNIX based systems, the root certificate will need to be converted base=
d on your specific application requirements and installed into the local tr=
usted root certificate store.
For browser users, the root certificate attached to this notice will need t=
o be installed into the trusted root certificate store at the workstation l=
evel. This can be done through the Microsoft Management Console by the syst=
em administrators.
