NOTICE TYPE:  M-A073014-02 Education/Training

SHORT DESCRIPTION:  Reminder - ERCOT to provide training on the use of synchrophasor technology in Real-Time Operations

INTENDED AUDIENCE:  Transmission Operators, TDSPs, QSEs and Power Plant Operators

DAY AFFECTED:  September 16 – 17, 2014

LONG DESCRIPTION:  On September 16 and 17, ERCOT will offer training on the use of synchrophasor technology in Real-Time Operations and the application of the ‘Real-Time Dynamics Monitoring System (RTDMS®)’ tool. The target audience for the training consists of Transmission Operators (TO), Transmission Distribution Service Providers (TDSP), Qualified Scheduling Entities (QSE)  and Power Plant Operators.

RTDMS® was developed by Electric Power Group (EPG) for real-time Wide Area Visualization of Real-Time Dynamics using Synchrophasor Technology.  ERCOT receives real-time data from 69 Phasor Measurement Units (PMUs) across its transmission system, installed as a part of the Department of Energy (DOE)-funded project entitled, ‘Discovery Across Texas: Technology Solutions for Wind Integration in ERCOT’. Although this training is generally designed for TOs and TDSPs with operational responsibilities for PMUs, QSEs and Power Plant Operators are welcomed to attend to better understand how PMUs can help them meet NERC model validation requirements and monitor oscillations.

ACTION REQUIRED:    To enroll in the Real-Time Dynamics Monitoring System course, go to ERCOT’s Learning Management System under Nodal Market Workshops.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:  The course will be held at the ERCOT Facility in Taylor, Texas.  The agenda is attached to this Market Notice. Please register prior to the close of business day on September 5, 2014. ERCOT will limit attendance to the first 75 registrants. Participants will be able to get Continuing Education Credits. It is expected that participants attending this training course should have a basic understanding of PMUs and Energy Management Systems.

Following the training, it is expected that the participants will be able to provide in-depth training on this topic to others in their respective organizations and become Subject Matter Experts (SMEs).

The ERCOT Training curriculum includes a wide variety of courses ranging from general introductions to deeper explorations of specific market topics and processes.  This course is part of a series of instructor-led and web-based training courses available to Market Participants.
