PGDTF,

NERC is hosting a workshop on performing the GMD studies.  This should be a good opportunity to improve our knowledge of these studies.

Background and Topic

Severe geomagnetic disturbances (GMDs) caused by solar storms have the potential to disrupt the reliable operation of the Bulk Electric System. Recently, NERC and the industry developed a new transmission planning standard to address this reliability risk by requiring applicable entities to perform GMD Vulnerability Assessments and develop corrective actions for identified performance issues. The proposed standard, TPL-007-1 – Transmission System Planned Performance for Geomagnetic Disturbance Events, is filed and pending regulatory approval. TPL-007-1 is applicable to Planning Coordinators, Transmission Planners, Transmission Owners, and Generation Owners with grounded transformers connected at 200 kV or higher.

The purpose of the workshop is to provide general engineering guidance and to familiarize participants with studies and analysis used in performing GMD Vulnerability Assessments. Topics will include:

  • GMD events and how they interact with the interconnected transmission system
  • Steps required to carry out the studies needed for a GMD Vulnerability Assessment
  • Data required for these studies

Representatives from entities that are applicable to proposed TPL-007-1 are encouraged to attend the workshop and early registration is recommended. Additional workshops to support the needs of industry in implementing the proposed standard will be announced at a later date. Listen-only remote access to the workshop is being provided using the connection information above.

Proposed standard TPL-007-1 and related project material are available on the NERC Standards Development page.
