NOTICE DATE: November 8, 2019

NOTICE TYPE: M-A100419-03 Operations

SHORT DESCRIPTION: FINAL Geomagnetically-Induced Current (GIC) flow results posted

INTENDED AUDIENCE: Resource Entities and Transmission Service Providers (TSPs)

DAY AFFECTED: November 8, 2019

LONG DESCRIPTION: On October 18, 2019, ERCOT posted preliminary GIC flow results for the supplemental GMD event, and a preliminary update to the GIC flow results for the benchmark GMD event, as described in Market Notice M-A100419-02 Implementation of Details of PGRR070 - Preliminary Geomagnetically-Induced Current (GIC) flow results posted. ERCOT requested that TSPs and Resource Entities provide comments on the posted GIC flow results by November 1, 2019. ERCOT addressed the comments received from TSPs and Resource Entities. FINAL GIC flow results have now been posted.

The FINAL GIC flow results are posted as a “GIC Transformer GIC Flow Information” report (EMIL ID PG3-953-M, Report ID 15633) in the “Regional Transmission Planning (5 year Transmission Plan)” portlet on the Regional Planning page of the Market Information System (MIS) Secure Area.

Pursuant to paragraph (1)(d) of Planning Guide Section 6.11, Process for Developing Geomagnetically-Induced Current (GIC) System Models, supporting models are available to TSPs in the “GMD Planning Studies” reports (EMIL ID PG6-105-M, Report ID 14546) in the “Models” portlet on the Transmission Service Provider Information page of the MIS Certified Area.

In both locations, see file names that include the title "Final_Transformer_GIC".

ACTION REQUIRED: Pursuant to paragraph (2) of Planning Guide Section 3.1.8, ERCOT requests that affected TSPs and Resource Entities provide their thermal impact assessment results, and suggested actions to mitigate the impact of GICs, if applicable, via e-mail to [log in to unmask] with “Transformer Thermal Impact Assessment” in the subject line by May 8, 2021.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: On October 18, 2019, ERCOT partially implemented Planning Guide Revision Request (PGRR) 070, Revised Responsibilities for Performing Geomagnetic Disturbance (GMD) Vulnerability Assessments, and posted preliminary GIC flow results as described in previous market notices.

In addition to TSPs and Resource Entities, this notice is also issued to compliance contacts for all Texas Regional Entity Transmission Owners and Generator Owners registered with NERC.

PGRR070 and associated documents can be found on the ERCOT website.
