PGDTF,
Yesterday at ROS, ROS voted to disband PGDTF as the responsibilities have now all been transferred to other working groups. The modeling responsibilities have been transferred to SSWG and the studies will continue to be done by ERCOT Planning and reviewed at RPG. We will be archiving both the public and restricted PGDTF liservs.
Good afternoon everyone. Our next meeting is scheduled for 07/18 at 9:30 am. Please send any agenda topics that you would like to include by Friday 07/14 EOB. I'm attaching the May meeting minutes for your reference as well.
Please let me know if you have any questions or comments.

All,
As part of the transition of GMD modeling responsibilities to SSWG and the sunsetting of PGDTF, we have created a new listserv called [log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]> that will take the place of [log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]>. All of the existing subscribers from [log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]> have been transferred to the new listserv which SSWG will utilize for the next GMD model build to maintain separation from the main SSWG listserv. Once PGDTF sunsets, the two PDGTF listservs will be retired and archived.

We still don't have a volunteer for Vice Chair this year, I will start to reach out to some of the TSPs that haven't participated in this role in the past. But if someone would like to volunteer last minute it would be greatly appreciated.

PGDTF,
As mentioned during our meeting, Jorge Canamar will be stepping up as our chair for 2022 and we need a volunteer for the vice chair position.
In the past AEP, CenterPoint, LCRA, Oncor, Sharyland and WETT have held the chair and vice chair positions. It would be great if we have someone from a different TSP to volunteer. Please reach out to me or Jorge if you would like to volunteer.

During the October and November PGDTF meetings we started the discussion to determine the frequency to develop the GIC models as well as the working group to take on the responsibility of developing the models. The majority of the feedback I received was in support of developing the models every 60 months as the standard requires. If you disagree with this approach please let me know.

As discussed during the Task Force meeting, it is time to elect a new chair and vice chair for the task force and we are looking for candidates. The responsibilities for these positions are:
PGDTF Chair: preside at all meetings and responsible for preparation of agendas PGDTF Vice Chair: take meeting minutes and act as chair in the absence of the chair.
Chu Liang from WETT volunteered to the Chair role of PGDTF in 2021. But we still need a volunteer for the vice chair position. Most of the Task Force heavy lifting has been done in previous years so it would not have a huge impact on your daily routine, so please consider volunteering.

As we discussed in the December meeting we are looking for candidates who are willing to be 2020 PGDTF Vice Chair. The Vice Chair is responsible for taking meeting minutes as well as acting as the Chair in the absence of the Chair. Please let me know if you are interested or would like to nominate someone. This position will be a good networking opportunity.
I still have not received any volunteers for the vice chair position yet. Please consider volunteering, this is a good growth opportunity also most of the heavy lifting has been done in pervious year so it would not have a huge impact on your daily work.
In the past Oncor, Centerpoint, LCRA and AEP have held the chair and vice chair positions. So It would be great if we have someone from a different TSP volunteer.

PGDTF members, Attached are the agenda for September 12th PGDTF meeting and the meeting notes from the last August 13th PGDTF meeting. I have also attached the current PGDTF scope that will be updated in our meeting.
The only comment I have on the agenda is when are we going to discuss/decide which analysis technique to use for the supplemental event? The task force and ERCOT may not be ready for this discussion yet but just want to make sure it is on our radar.
Thanks,

Nick, For the supplemental event, it is in calculating the GIC flow or the vulnerability assessment study. For the GIC flow calculation (R9) ERCOT will be using applying the 12v/km for the whole foot print, for the GMD assessment study, ERCOT will be working on the bench mark first and that might clear a way on how to proceed on supplemental event. Thanks, Aster
Oncor suggests adding a discussion of the development of the GMD event outages and the expected format for those events. Also, adding ERCOT GMD operating procedure to the discussion of EOP-010-1.

Aster, I suppose I need to watch how I phrase it, when I say we, I meant we (PGDTF), not we (CPS Energy). :) I was making an assumption that there are no effects from GMD because PGDTF has left it out of the guide, however, it could have just been an oversight. As a voting member of the ROS, I will have a hard time endorsing this document if it doesn't give some direction on high-bus diff.
PGDTF, I have updated the draft based to address bus protection and let me know your comments, the added paragraph is:,
5.10. High Voltage Bus Protection Bus differential relays protect the bus from internal faults based on Khirchoff's current law that states the sum of the currents entering a given node must be equal to the currents leaving that node. During GMD Event the currents including the harmonics into the bus are equal to the currents from the bus and will not affect the differential protection except where primary and secondary current transformers respond differently to harmonics.

PGDTF,
For the face to face modeling meeting next week on June 12th, ALL TSPs should be present. Due to how PSSE works, it only shows some selected errors at a time. The given errors must be solved before PSSE can be run to find the next set of errors. Therefore, if a TSP is not present and there is an error with their equipment in PSSE, the entire group cannot do much to move forward towards finalizing the models.

We are delaying the beginning of the Pass 3 of the GIC model build by one week as I continue to work with individual TSPs to resolve modeling issues. Once these issues are resolved we can then find preliminary flows. This delay will move the entire model build schedule back by one week. I'll send out an updated schedule when I release the materials for Pass 3. Right now, Pass 3 is scheduled to begin on 5/13.
PGDTF members, Attached is the draft agenda for May 16th PGDTF meeting. Attached is also the meeting notes for the PGDTF meeting held on April 12, 2019 for your review.
For our May meeting we will have experts presenting on Assessing GMD Impacts on Protection System. And please keep in mind that the PDGTF May meeting is on May 16, 2019 (not on May 07, 2019) and at LCRA office not at the usual ERCOT Office. The address is LCRA Redbud Center, Room 108 3601 Lake Austin Blvd Austin, Texas 78703

Dear All, In continuation to our discussion at the PGDTF meeting about the governmental agencies interest in GMD, please click on the link below for the testimonies at the roundtable discussion on Perspectives on Protecting the Electric Grid from an Electromagnetic Pulse or Geomagnetic Disturbance that took place at the U.S. Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee on February 27, 2019:
At the PGDTF meetings, we proposed face-to-face meetings similar to those the other planning model groups have when creating/updating models. I do not see any meetings in the proposed schedule. PGDTF found these meetings extremely helpful, if not essential, during the development of the 2021 models because most of the TSPs do not have the GIC software like they do power flow software to check the cases in-house. When will these face-to-face meetings be held?
I agree with Mike. Such face to face meeting to create/update models would be very helpful.

PGDTF members, Attached is the draft agenda for the December 13th PGDTF meeting. It's a full agenda with lots going on...
I have compiled an assortment of documents that may be helpful in determining your GMD Vulnerability Assessment System Events (GMD caused outages) as required by NERC TPL-007-1 (Table 1 included below).
ERCOT has requested that these events be submitted to ERCOT by December 31, 2018. Hope these helps.
My recollection of the last PGDTF meeting is Category B outages will not be included in the GMDVA, but will be examined later in a separate study. Am I missing something?
Thanks,
Mike

Mike,
ERCOT plans to collect both Category A and B outages, and make decisions on how the outages should be included after receiving all the submissions. Thanks.

Dear PGDTF members,
The GMD vulnerability assessment scope is attached. It was updated based on comments received from the last PGDTF meeting. All the agreed upon comments and edits have been incorporated. ERCOT has made several additional edits to address several items that were discussed during the last PGDTF meeting, i.e. the GMD caused outages, and the orientations to be studied. Thanks.
Oncor does not have any comments on the meeting notes.
Thanks,
Mike
